Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine where fine sterile needles are inserted into the skin at certain points on the body. Traditionally, the treatment was deemed to be a complementary or alternative medicine treatment. However in recent years, more and more positive scientific evidence is emerging.
Some of the possible benefits include:
- Pain relief
- Relaxation of muscle tissue
- Stimulation of the nervous system
- Increased local circulation
- Release of endorphins (the body’s own natural pain relieving, ‘feel-good’ hormones)
There is reasonably good evidence that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for:
- Back pain
- Headaches
- Arthritis (particularly of the knees)
It can also be used to treat a number of other conditions. Your physiotherapist will assess your condition or injury and advise you on the best treatment approach.
Our physiotherapists are registered with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).
